Continuity Test: A multimeter can be used to check continuity of a wire with any thickness of insulation. The process is called "Ohmmeter" or "Resistance" test, and it is one of the basic functions of a multimeter. To use a multimeter to check continuity, you will need to set the multimeter to the resistance or ohmmeter setting, and then place the probes on either end of the wire. If the wire is continuous, the multimeter will display a low resistance reading, typically between 0 and 1 ohm. If there is a break in the wire, the multimeter will display "OL" (overload) or "infinity" on the screen.
